Skating Duo NZ Bound - TOWNSVILLE's Sacha Piper-McConnell and Darren Schuck have accepted invitations to compete at the New Zealand National Ice Skating Championships in October. The pair will travel to New Zealand after competing in the Queensland Championships in Brisbane (September 24-27). Both McConnell, 15 and Schuck, 17, are coached by McConnell's 20-year-old sister, Cassandra, at the Warrina Rink. Schuck also has a Brisbane-based coach. Cassandra said the two promising skaters were living up to the good reputation Townsville skating had earned.

"The Townsville skaters have a fabulous reputation with the ice-skating fraternity because they achieve fabulous results," the coach said. "Even our very young less-experienced kids come home with awards. They show the ability and courage to fight and work hard."

Training on the smaller Warrina Rink is a disadvantage and Townsville skaters spend time training on full-sized rinks before major competitions.

"When attending competitions our skaters must leave earlier to readjust to Olympic-sized rinks and to build their stamina," Cassandra said.

Bradley Santer has moved to the USA for at least six months to train under Galina Zimetskaya, former coach of Olympic gold medallists, Victor Petrenko and Oksana Baiul.

Miriam Manzano has left her long time coach, Reg Park and the her home in the ACT, relocating to Brisbane to train under Colin Jackson, who coached Stephanie Zhang and Anthony Liu for many years.

Joanne Carter is currently in Vancouver, Canada for 2 months to attend a summer camp with Joanne McLeod at 8 rinks.

Anthony Liu, after taking the 2003 season off, has indicated his knee injury is healing and he hopes to compete at the 2003-2004 Australian Nationals. Liu recently purchased the Ice Castle rink in California.

REG PARK LOSES HOME IN BUSH FIRE
Bush fires sweeping across the Australian Capital Territory destroyed the home of Reg Park on Friday night. These are the worst fires in recent times and have destroyed more than 400 homes in the past 24 hours.

Reg is an icon in the sport of ice skating in Australia and is the long-time coach of Miriam Manzano.

He lost his home and all of his possessions yesterday due to this unprecedented bush fire. As with all his neighbours, he had no warning and was only able to save his passport, cat and the clothes he was wearing. He was unable to save any of his history - photos, memorabilia, et al. He would especially love to have any photos of his mother.

If anyone has any photos, newspaper articles, et al, of Reg and would like to send them to him please do so to the following address:

ACTISA, PO Box 76, Woden, ACT 2606, Australia

If you would like to e-mail Reg please do so to the following address: robandclaire@myaccess.com.au
