New
South Wales figure skater Joanne Carter leads the Karl Schaeffer
Memorial Figure skating event in Vienna after the short
program.
The
former Nagano Olympian outperformed a field that included
world number 10, Viktoria Volchkova of Russia to post one
of the best results of her international career.
Hungary’s
Dianna Poth is in second place after the short program,
with Volchkova in third.
Carter,
24, recorded Australia’s best placing at an Olympic Games
in Nagano, finishing in 12th position
But a major knee injury in 1998 put her out of competition
for almost two years and her results since have not matched
her early promise. Carter was runner-up to Miriam Manzano
in the Australian National Championships earlier this year.
