Australian
figure skater Joanne Carter has achieved Australia's best
result at a World University Games, finishing in sixth place
in the ladies event in Piancavallo, Italy.
Joanne
skated very well in the short program finishing in fourth
place, but slipped back to sixth place after some controversial
judging in the free skate.
The
result is also Joanne's highest international competition
result, improving on her ninth place finish at the Four
Continents event in 1999.
Australian
University team Chef de Mission Chris Solly was very happy
with the result. "It’s a big step forward for Winter University
Sport in Australia, he said.
The event was won by Japanese skater Shizuka Arakawa, with
Angela Lien of the USA in second and Lesley Hawker of Canada
in third.
