In February 2005, Joanne became the highest-placing Australian skater ever in a senior championship event, placing fourth at the Four Continents Championship in Korea.

Carter is the first Australian skater and the second female skater in the world after the 1998 Olympic Champion, Tara Lipinski, to land the rare and difficult triple loop / triple loop combination in championship competition.

She is also the first Australian ladies' singles skater to land a triple lutz in national and championship competition, in both the short and long programs.
