Skating in her first overseas international event, Australia's Cheltzie Lee has placed sixth in a field of 33 skaters in the short program at the Vienna Cup in Austria.

Cheltzie scored a total 43.74 points - just below the 46.26 she achieved in the recent Australian Figure Skating Championships last month - and is very well-placed for a possible top 10 finish.

The event is being led by America's Kristine Musademba with 54.35 points.

Lee's coach Kylie Fennell, speaking after the short program, was delighted at her skater's performanace.

"She was fantastic," Fennell said. "A great triple combo, the axel had good speed though the landing was short, the combo spin was fast with all positions held."

"I really asked her to focus on getting speed before the spiral sequence and sell the entry into the first spiral.

"Well, she stretched her neck so high going into the spiral and sold that entry, you would have thought she was a superstar."

"Overall she was faster than ever before, jumped big and spun fast."

"She also got fourth in the components score, which is something that she should be extremely proud of.
