Miriam Manzano has finished in 20th place in the world figure skating championships. The Australian champion added a 20th placing in the free skate to the 18th she recorded in the short program to improve six places overall on her 2003 world title result of 26th.

Her best world championship result was 16th in 2002.

The event was won by Japanese skater Shizuka Arakawa, the 22-year-old producing a near flawless performance to claim her first major championship medal.

Americans Sasha Cohen and Michelle Kwan took silver and bronze, the defending world champion placing second in the free skate to climb above Japan's Miki Ando in the overall result.

Kwan has now made the podium in the past nine world championships.
